Our mission is to decrease drudgery and increase women’s access to and comfort with technology.
Harini is devoted to providing a semi-mechanized rice transplanting solution for women farmers in India. While reducing drudgery and increasing productivity, this product empowers women by providing access to technology and giving them confidence to take on more prominent roles in farm administration.
Need - Driver - Context
The solution, is a small rice transplanter called Harini. Harini means female deer, both in Tamil and Hindi. This rice transplanter is compact, very light, about 4 ft tall, and is specifically designed for women farmers in India.
With our solution, Harini, farmers can transplant rice seedlings without bending. Harini also lets them still use traditional rice bundles. This human powered machine lets the farmers to achieve almost the level of productivity and efficiency of highly mechanized transplanting, without consuming any fuel or power. And therefore, there’s no emission, either.
User Scenarios
First, prepare the cartridge with traditional rice seedling bundles. They are going to prepare several of these cartridges in advance. This can be directly done at the rice nursery, instead of bundling up rice seedlings.
Then they load the prepared cartridge on Harini.
Then they adjust the handle and start using Harini in the field. Simply by pushing and pulling the machine and the handle, women farmers can easily transplant rice seedlings.
Sita's extremely busy day. She wakes up at 4 am and works until 11 PM. Farming is majority of her daily routine.
