DEBUG Identity
AN IDENTITY SYSTEM FOR A VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE
DEBUG is a virtual reality installation that allows one to virtually experience and to reflect on racial microaggressions. As the VR experience simulates the discomfort, dissonance, and disturbance of microaggressions on people, these emotions were represented through its identity system.
"Microaggressions are like mosquito bites." Through time, stigmatized people feel the macro-level effect of microaggressions. To emphasize this metaphor, DEBUG virtually simulates mosquitoes buzzing out common microaggressions to participants. They are shown as microaggressions.
Through colour and typography, the disruptive nature of the VR installation is reflected visually. Hitherto type made by Thunder Studio is used to emulate the emotions of the experience. The font's bent form also replicates typographically the buzzing sounds of the mosquitoes.
DEBUG — VR Experience Against Racism
started as a project with the MXLab at KISD,
which then debuted publicly at re:publica 22.
