SCREENTIME FOR CHILDREN BY HASRA HAZIM
Introduction
In this assignment, Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT), a service under Cyber Security Brunei (CSB), has requested us to produce a 30 second awareness video regarding the current social issues in Brunei. We were given 13 topics to choose from and the topic that I chose is screentime for children.

Background of the Social Issue
According to BruCERT(2021), children have been spending more time on gadgets and watching TV recently due to increased time at home. Screen time can be both good and bad for children, but there are ways to manage screen time for their emotional, mental, and social well-being.

The benefits of screen time for the children are allowed to keep in touch with their family. With access to internet, children can explore new interests and hobbies as they watch through the internet, and it is also a helpful tool in online learning which happened in Brunei a while ago due to the COVID pandemic

However, too much screen time can also be bad for one’s health, especially to a child’s mental and physical well-being. They have higher chances in becoming overweight at such a young age as they spent focusing their attention on the screen which also contributes to their lack of sleep and being active in outdoor activities. They would also tend to have poor academic performance especially in an online class where they can be distracted by going to another website instead of paying attention. Mentality wise, because of the over-exposure to screentime, children would be having extreme behavior problems as their emotions would explode in a fit of rage for leaving their screentime.

As mentioned above, there are benefits to screentime for children however, it is also imperative to manage their screentime as well
