Gujarati Display Font :: Babuchak

Special Thanks to my Guiding Professor & Mentor - Prof. Rucha Suryawanshi
Babuchak is an experimental Display Font.

Rightly called the font is ‘Babuchak’ (common slang often said in Gujarati.)
In simple words it means a nerdy villager. The characters of font are inspired by the bits and parts of one of the liveliest and vibrant culture – GUJARAT. This includes Religion, Festivals, Weddings, Paintings, Architecture, Embroideries, and yes of course most importantly Cuisine!

The main purpose of this project was to solely create something iconic for Gujarat’s culture. Every alphabet has a distinct individuality.
From the diverse culture few important aspects were taken into consideration for creating individual characters. According to the sketch of an alphabet, it was incorporated in the best suited cultural element.

It is a myth that a Gujarati woman after the age of 30 develops obese bottoms.
This exceptionally weird myth became an inspiration for the skeleton of the font that is Round and Curvy.

The font went through the process of selecting the subject followed by constructing (sketching) the characters, designing it digitally & applying the font.
Listed below are the few aspects which were an inspiration to designing the alphabets:

The numbers are designed using the famous cuisine of Gujarat that includes, Khakhra, Paatra, Khaadvi, Khaman, Dhoklas, etc.
The remaining alphabets are inspired by:
Religion -    Lord Krishna’s attire
Wedding -   During the wedding ceremony the bride is dressed in red and white sari i.e. Gharchola or Panetar.
Festival - Navratri & Uttarayan (Kite Flying) were used to build few characters.
Modhera Temple’s -  intricate carvings were used as graphic elements to create an alphabet.
Paintings -  Pithora art & Warli were are famous paintings of Gujarat. The characters of these paintings were used as elements of design.
Embroidery - Applique/ Katab *  Rebari * Aari Bharat * Mutwa Bharat, etc were used as an inspiration to create a set of alphabets.
Patola Silk - Famous fabric of Patan, used to create Royal Sarees.
