Bye Monsanto! (Mar 20, 2014)

Monsanto is a multinational supplier of chemicals for agriculture, mainly herbicides, pesticides and GMOs. The devastating effects proved for human health, genetic variety of food and reproduction of bees from the application of its products has put the reputation and ethics of the company on the focus of social and environmental movements worldwide.

In June 15, 2012 President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner announced from New York to build the world's largest Monsanto’s seeds plant in the town of Malvinas Argentinas , Córdoba. Since then the people from the province of Cordoba have mobilized to warn the population and avoid becoming a victim of the negative effects. From those claims, different legal actions and investigations have been carried out and a court ruling halted  the construction confirming the unconstitutionality of what was done by the municipality, the province and the multinational. The study of environmental impact of the project also had a negative result due to no contemplating a toxic wastes plan while the multinational Monsanto, an industry leader, argues that it has not been done properly.

The municipal mayor of Malvinas Argentinas has all the necessary  tools and evidence  to give the refusal to Monsanto. However, he explains that his main interest is social peace while he continues to omit the voice of the residents of Malvinas Argentinas , Cordoba and even from other provinces who have joined the fight for the health of the population of Cordoba and against the installation of the Monsanto’s plant, which would translate into more  transgenic fields and pollutants spraying within the country.

On March 20, exactly one month after the last mobilization in Malvinas Argentinas which ended with a violent repression by the police that left several injured and a woman hospitalized with brain surgery, people again took the streets to march peacefully to the door of the City Hall and stopped with lighted candles in front of the police cordon to ask for a dialogue with mayor Arzani.
