The coloured identity is ambiguous, and is one of the most diverse and complex identities in South Africa
(Petrus & Isaacs-Martin, 2012:88)
Coloured is a South African term used to describe and identify individuals under a racial category, as opposed to international beliefs. Ambiguous Manes is the outcome of in-depth academic research and personal testimonials.

This body of work is derived from personal experience of detaching the significance placed upon hair and one’s emotions and each portrait is symbolic of the diversity of hair textures, colour, style, and length of coloured individuals in South Africa. Hair is an expression of identity and there are various ways that an individual could style their hair – dying, cutting, chemical treatment, weaving etc.

Applying a fine art lens to portrait photography permitted the opportunity for each portrait to transcend into figures that are identifiable to coloured individuals and people 'outside' of the community.
