Foram os gregos que criaram os primeiros salões de cabeleireiro (koureia), em Atenas, construídos sobre a praça pública, o Ágora. Lá, os Kosmetes ou "Embelezadores de Cabelo", escravos especiais, circulavam soberanos. Os escravos cuidavam dos homens e as escravas das mulheres.
