3D model and visualization of the brand-new Airbus aircraft

The personal research project I've done to improve my skills in hard-surface modeling, UV-mapping, shading, and look-dev.

Please wait until all images load and take a look at a making-of part.
Do not hesitate to like and share it if you appreciate the project

Thanks!

Behind the scenes:

I have always wondered about aviation as well as 3D
And I wanted to combine them into one big project. It took me more than a year to complete.

I started a project by collecting references. Hopefully, portals of aviation spotters are full of photos from every side and closeups

For creating the plane I used Autodesk Image Modeler software.
That software generates 3D point clouds and cameras using photos. Manually but very precisely. Unfortunately, it dies software for more than 10 years… but probably the only ones who can handle with it
.
After that part is done, I exported a scene with 3d cameras, point cloud to 3ds max using MAX script, and matched them together with photos inside 3ds max.

Based on it, I started to create splines of the main parts of the aircraft's shape. The next step was preparing a block-out of the major part of the aircraft.

When block-outs were done, I started to add more details and create a high poly model. It was the most complicated part and took me more than half of the year. I recreated probably every detail of the aircraft. Every rivet and smallest part I've carefully recreated.
The most difficult was to keep the shape smooth and rounded.

After the 3D modeling part was completed I started to make UV Unwrap and texturing.
Firstly I unwrap shapes and used RizomUV for this task. Big parts contain over 5+ UV tiles and RizumUV has pretty good optimization for high-density polygons models.
Example of main body unwrapping:

After, I manually prepared over 30+ unique maps in Photoshop and recreated most parts of the real plane signs and paintwork. It was a light nightmare to match it :)
To cover a 3d model with textures I used Substance Painter and prepare unique brushes
Hopefully, it supports multi-UV tiles like Mari
