Emotional and motivational storytelling in UX/UI design

Emotional and motivational storytelling in (adaptive) UX/UI design
We all use apps on a daily basis, from early in the morning until late at night. To make an app that stands out (and has good user retention), storytelling is a rarely used but very effective approach. Human beings love stories - from cavemen bonfires to Netflix binging, stories are what attract and enjoy us. And emotion is what makes consumers use and love a product on the long run.
When we are speaking about emotions: gamification triggers the same human instincts, that is the reward center of our brains. Combine storytelling and gamification incentives, and add some non-stock illustrations, and you'll have a pretty good start for a pleasing app!
Recently, I developed a motivation-centered app - habbbit is about collecting and comparing health-related data to make better lifestyle choices. Doesn't sound especially sparkling and engaging, does it? Here is where storytelling comes into play. Even the most boring part of an app - creating a new account - can become part of the adventure if you're using story elements (a map that leads you to your secret goal) and a pop culture reference for the form field microcopy.
The screen real estate of different device formats is a factor that should be considered in planning the content. While mobile devices clearly are limited, desktop versions can dive deep into the story. Here, I lay out the different elements of the "rewards" screen in a way that the design looks like an adventurer's table, with the user being the (badass) adventurer, planning the next steps of the adventure. For each level, this table could be designed differently, thus adding an additional element of suspense.
Bein rather a UX than a UI designer, I'm a determined proponent of making products and services useful, easy, and feasible. But that doesn't mean that we can't design them to be fun, entertaining, and addictive, too!
