Sporting Guide by Liz Goldwyn

It was my great fortune in 2014 to be referred to author/filmmaker Liz Goldwyn on a research project that utilized two of my best skill sets: an obsession with maps and an obnoxious ability to regurgitate and integrate arcane pieces of Los Angeles history.

Goldwyn was similarly braiding strands of personal passion with an enchanting and vivid fiction account of historic prostitution in Los Angeles during the first years of the 20th century.

My role as a researcher on the project was to help execute the lamination between narrative and historic evidence by organizing photo research, leading licensing efforts, fact checking, and creating a rigorous historical timeline to graft at the end of the book.

Though I had some experience working with fire maps, the Sporting Guide project was an amazing opportunity to deep dive into Baist, Dakin, and Sanborn editions with an eye to converting nodes of geographic history into compelling stories.
As a bonus, Vice outed me as an "eccentric nerd" in their feature story of Liz, for which I provided grave-finding services.
