What is Mahayana Buddhism?
Many modern scholars hold the view that Mahayana Buddhism is derived from Mahāsaṅghika. But since the Mahāsaṅghika continued to exist long after the emergence of Mahayana Buddhism, the emergence of the Mahayana cannot be explained solely as the transition of the Mahāsaṅghika to the Mahayana.
