FINISH WITH THE TRUTH / Media Sandbox
Finish With The Truth is an experimental installation focused on our most powerful but most under-used sense: smell.

The work is based on moments from the Sofia Coppola film Lost in Translation and creates a scent narrative where complex sensory impressions combine to form 'a poem inspired by cinema and made with scent'. The work is in four parts, each of which is a mix of a specially created scent, a voice monologue and a combination of light and vibration.

Visitors experience the work in near-total darkness to minimise ambient visual distractions and focus their senses on the interaction.

The experience is delivered by four pebble-shaped 'smart' objects, each one of which emits a part of the smell 'narrative' and triggers a spoken passage. Through light patterns and vibration the pebbles direct the user through the order in which they should be smelt.

The scents were individually created using combinations of odorant molecules to evoke a moment from the film. This led the the team to recreate a smoky hotel bar, Tokyo street smells, a yatai fish bar and even the smell of Bill Murray chewing gum.
