Genetic modified organism - GOOD FOOD poster
Designers generally work for many companies and advertising. My professor
from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk says-
"Designers are like prostitutes, they work for everyone who pays."
But I think designers should spend part time of his work with projects which
try to make the world and life better.
A very important thing is to check the problem and to refrain from saying
some stupid things.
When I think about GMO I find different data - some of them are positive and
the others bring fears.
So I decided to prepare the picture that wouldn't be simply didactic.
This poster doesn't give simple answers but it says about threats and calls
for action, to check everything, to think and
decide on your own. Your decision shouldn't be influenced by an advertising
prepared by a rich company.
I looked for the object that would be very strong at visual level, and at
the same time it would be simple and popular.
I chose fruit preferred and used by everyone. First, I made the series of
illustrations containing genetically modified fruit - a toothed cocnut,
one-eyed olives, a hairy banana and so
on. Then I examined the focus group - my friends and colleagues - to get to
know how these connections influence their minds.
Then I decided to make the two objects real: a hairy lemon, taking into
consideration the whole cultural context and a toothed coconut.
I had a problem to find real teeth to make the coconut.
That's why I made the hairy lemon first. The hair are the real human ones
and implanted to the lemon skin exactly as it is implanted into bald
people's skin.
Then the object was photographed with an analog camera. The project was
completed by
scanning, digital preapring, lightening the background, etc. I worked in
graphic programms like Photoshop and adding right coloured typography in the
right place.
The headline was inserted in a way to avoid jumping of an eye from the
picture to the caption and to be the part of the composition.
