INTIMISPHERE
TIME: May 2021
LOCATION: Copenhagen - Denmark
TYPE: CHART-Architecture design contest
THEME: Pavilion
Concept
Intimisphere is a project that seeks to create intense intimacy after a time of distancing. Through its narrowness it will bind people together in a social intimacy, where the spaces
celebrate its smallness and where touch is an important presence. It’s about feeling each other, side by side, back to back and be a part of each other. Together we bring pieces
from all around Denmark to create this pavilion. The handcraft of the people will shape the knitted and crocheted sleeves, and it will create an intimate relation to each unique
piece and will appear colorful to bring hope and smiles back. Intimisphere celebrates the connectedness between all of us and let us explore it through the touch and the visual
experience brought together by many.
Intimisphere focuses on the social intimacy, and that is why we have chosen to make it as tight as possible, but still comfortable. In every box there can sit up to 6 people, but
then they really feel each other and has to weave legs to be able to ’solve the puzzle’.
It’s a social project, as we will cooperate with the knitting and crocheting community in the whole of Denmark, to activate them, to make all who wants to be apart of this pavilion,
before its build, and when its build to enjoy this unique piece, that couldn’t and shouldn’t be made ‘alone’. We will reach out through social media, contacting knitting
communities; so it will both be a promotion to be apart of the pavilion and to promote CHART Architecture. It will bring us together across a lot of different fields, as the knitting/
crocheting is a task for everyone. We will ask for a square of 15 cm x 15 cm and the rest is up to each person. We can therefor not know by now how it will look like in the
end, but that is a part of the proces, which will weave us all together.
To add to the intimacy the benches will have no back to lean back on, except another body. So imagine the feeling of touch by a stranger, only a sleeve of fabric will be in-between, but it will reinforce and challenge the notion of sitting in a public space. Where the privatsphere gets poked into intimisphere.
At last we have the ambitions to build the structure out of recycled wood if possible. The project is both sustainable in the way we will be careful with which materials we use,
and use as little as possible. Second, do to a new rise in the knitting and croheting universe, people have a lot of left over yarn laying around not getting used - we will give
them a purpose. And it’s sustainable in a social manner, where we will activate and bring people together across fields and open each others eyes for both architecture and the
possibility in knitting and crocheting.
