Modern Reinterpretation Package Design for Doljabi

Overview

달랑은 전통 돌잡이의 성별/직업 관련 의미부여에서 탈피하여 기존의 용품 대신 용맹함, 건강과 무병장수, 순수함, 유복함, 다재다능함을 상징하는 다섯가지의 오브제로 돌을 맞은 아이의 일생에 행운을 기원하는 의미를 가집니다. 또한, 일회성으로 끝나는 것이 아닌 인테리어 모빌과 키링 등의 악세서리로 재조합하여 아이가 몇 년 동안 계속 사용할 수 있는 토템/부적의 역함을 함으로써 행운의 의미가 지속되도록 합니다.

Dalang breaks away from the gender/job-related meaning of traditional doljabi and wishes for good luck in the life of a child who has been stoned with five objects that symbolize bravery, health and longevity, innocence, well-being, and versatility. In addition, the combination of accessories such as interior mobiles and key rings, rather than ending in a one-time manner, will continue to serve as a totem/ talisman that children can use for years.

돌잔치
아이의 첫 생일을 축하하는 의식으로, 아이의 앞날이 번영하기를 기원하는 한국의 풍습입니다.
돌잔치에서는 아이의 탄생을 축하하고 일생을 점치는 돌잡이를 진행합니다.

돌잡이

돌잡이의 ‘돌’은 첫 번째 생일을 의미하고, ‘잡이’는 아이가 무언가를 집는 것을 의미합니다.
아이의 첫 번째 생일인 돌잔치에서 아이가 탁자 위에 있는 많은 물건들 중에서 물건을 고르는 돌잡이는,
아이의 앞으로의 운세를 점치고 행복을 기원합니다.

DOLJANCHI
Janchi means party in Korean. Korean traditional custom, 1 - year - old baby's first birtyday party.

Doljanchi celebrates the birth of a child and holds a life-long fortune-telling doljabi.

DOLJABI

Dol means first birthday and jabi means to grab something in Korean.

a part of a baby's first birthday party. In which the baby selects an object among many items on a table, which is meant to indicate his / her fortune.

Problems & Solutions

달랑은 기존의 전통 돌잡이의 성역할 고착화와 단순 일회성 사용품의 문제점에서 출발했습니다.

돌잡이 시, 성별에 따라 직업과 의미가 나뉘는 돌잡이 용품이 아닌, 아이 일생에 행운을 기원하는 의미를 담는 것을 가장 큰 과제로 선정했습니다.

또한, 돌잡이 후 사용성을 잃어 버려지는 돌잡이 용품의 지속가능성에 대해서도 고민을 했습니다. 아이의 탄생에 축복을 담아, 아이의 일생에도 행운이 계속 함께하기를 바랍니다.

Dalang started with the problem of fixing the gender role of traditional doljabi and simple one-time use.

When it comes to doljabi, the biggest task was not to include doljabi items that are divided into jobs and meanings according to gender, but to wish good luck in the child's life.

Also, I thought about the sustainability of doljabi items that are discarded because they lose usability after doljabi. Blessed with the birth of the child, I hope that luck will continue to be with the child in his life.

Brand Name and Meaning

달랑 Dalang
달랑은 한국말로 달린 것이 적거나 하나만 있는 모양을 의미합니다.
또한, 달랑달랑은 작은 방울이나 매달린 물체가 흔들릴 때 나는 소리와 모양을 의미합니다.
이를 바탕으로 달랑과 달랑달랑의 의미를 함께 담아 모티브로 제작되었습니다.
돌잡이 시 각각의 오브제로 사용한 후, 하나로 모아서 모빌과 키링으로 재사용합니다.
달랑을 사용하며, 달랑달랑한 공통적인 모션을 통해 브랜드의 무드를 느낄 수 있습니다.

Dalang means a shape with few or only one running in Korean.
Also, dangling means the sound and shape of a small drop or hanging object when it shakes.
Based on this, the motif was created with the meaning of dangling and dangling.
After using it as a separate object for doljabi, collect it into one and reuse it as a mobile and key ring.
It uses dangling, and you can feel the mood of the brand through the dangling common motion.

달랑이라는 브랜드는 아이들의 첫 시작을 위한 축복과, 아이들의 순수함과 깨끗함 그리고 현대적으로 재해석된이라는 세가지 키워드를 브랜드의
아이덴디티로 확립하였으며, 이는 아이의 삶에 행운이 깃들기를 바라는 마음이 담겨져있습니다.
또한 슬로건을 “당신의 첫번째 생일을 위해” 로 지정하여 조금 더 직관적이고 사용자들을 위한 마음을 담고자 하였습니다.

The brand called dalang has three keywords: blessing for children's first start, innocence and cleanliness, and modern reinterpretation
It was established as an identity, and it contains a wish for good luck in the child's life.
We also designated the slogan as "For your very first birthday" to be more intuitive and include a heart for users.

Symbolize and Color Guide

한국 전통 돌잡이 용품의 형태와 의미를 바탕으로 달랑의 5가지 축복 상징을 지정했습니다.
또한 팝한 컬러의 원색을 이용하여 아이들로 하여금 흥미를 돋우고 눈에 잘 보일수있도록 하였으며,

조금 더 순수하고 아이와같은 분위기를 연출하고자 하였습니다.

Based on the form and meaning of traditional Korean doljabi items, we have designated five blessing symbols for dalang.
It also used the primary color of pop color to stimulate children's interest and make them more visible,

and to have a more innocent and childlike atmosphere I wanted to direct it.

Based on the shape and meaning of traditional Korean doljabi items, the five blessing symbols of dalang are as follows.

Baekseolgi, a Korean rice cake. means a child's clear and pure.
Yeopjeon, which was used as a currency in Korea in history. means wealth in a child's life.
