Built and designed by Ardie Tavangarian of the Arya Group, 1601 San Onofre Drive is an iconic mansion nestled adjacent to Santa Monica State Park. The estate is a masterclass in simplicity and sophistication, with a strong emphasis on connection with the environment.
A staircase ensemble is a key feature of the grand foyer, featuring striking lines, natural materials, and textures. Constructed next to a travertine partition, the floating staircase is a sculpture into itself.
When planning the renders for this project, it was fundamental to convey the concept of Barefoot Luxury, which aimed to elevate warmth and comfort over visual luxury. In addition to the meticulously curated selection of natural materials, the foyer featured a backlit travertine wall. Hence, to showcase the space, a combination of day and night lighting was used.
Day lighting was strategically selected to accentuate the main selling features of the space - the oak staircase with brass railings and fixtures, floor tiles made of Breccia Paradiso brown marble, and the travertine wall. Another prominent feature of the property - the board-formed curved concrete exterior wall - was built using local beach sand in the integration of the concrete. Hence, a special attention was given to the concrete wall, to convey its form, texture, and earthy colours. The angular lighting allowed to suggest the presence of a roof terrace, with olive trees that cast shadows on the concrete wall through sky windows.
A secondary one-point perspective render was created to enjoy the colour and texture harmony between the silver travertine of the Henge Monolith coffee table and the travertine wall.
A dramatic emotive night render of the foyer was included into the project to portray the beauty of the backlight onyx travertine wall. I opted for a silhouette effect, to draw viewers' eyes towards the warmth of the backlit travertine, while keeping the staircase in the focus.
