Artistic family apartment
Area - 165 sq m
Year - 2022
Location - Kyiv, Ukraine

The apartment belongs to a young couple with two kids. It is located on the third floor of the 5-story building, erected in 1912 as the apartment house in central Kyiv. The windows look on both sides of the building. So, you can see the sunrise in the bedroom and the sundown in the living room. The previous owners remodeled the space totally and removed all the original flooring, old doors, and even stucco work, which was typical of an old Kyiv apartment. The designer wanted to make her tribute to the old building and recreate its authentic atmosphere. “When I saw the large empty room with 4 meters high ceiling and four big windows in it, I immediately came up with a picture of how the future living room will look. I wanted to make the walls, the floor, ceiling, and windows like they are from the past and implement some modern furniture, light, and art,” – shared the designer Anastasiia Novikova.
Modern art by Ukrainian artists puts some accents in the space. For example, in the Living room, there is a sculpture by Grishigiano from his collection «Love Molecule.» Also, you can see paintings by Vlada Ralko, Taras Sereda, and Masha Reva and ceramic décor by Nina Laguta.
Creating stucco that looks authentic for the living room was the most challenging part. “I wanted it to come from the walls to the ceiling and includes some elements from our vintage mirror frame. I created a few sketches, then a Ukrainian craftsman sculpted them entirely in 1:1 scale, out of plasticine. After that, they made it from plaster.” – explains Anastasiia Novikova, the designer.
The apartment owners, who are engaged in the artistic sphere, are big fans of Paris. They always wanted to have their “Parisienne home” in the heart of Kyiv. Apart from traditional surfaces on the walls, floor, and ceiling, it required a fireplace with a big mirror above it. That is how a vintage fireplace of the era of Louis ХV, and a vintage mirror of the Napoleon II era appeared in the living room.
The designer aimed to create a light space with minimum colors and not overload the area with unnecessary décor. That is why the living room has white walls and monochromic furniture. Likewise, the bedroom mixes different shades of gray.
Anastasiia also brought the piano. It is an old model called "Ukraine” and the owners play it at their family parties.
Only children’s rooms are exceptions. They are the entire separate children’s space inside the apartment. One is greenish, and the other is warm gray with muted pink accents.
Two children’s rooms have an adjoining mezzanine 106 cm high that connects rooms. It turned out to be the favorite place for the kids, where they spent a lot of time playing.
