The multiple intelligence theory stems from the research of neuroscientist Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University. He developed his theory in the early 1980s, based on his personal and professional opposition to traditional theories of intelligence. Before Dr. Gardner developed his multiple intelligence theories, most scientists and educators defined intelligence as a uniform, limited capacity to learn and understand. It could be, and was, determined via a standardized test and assessed with a number on a scale.

However, Dr. Howard Gardner postulates that each person has the capacity to be intelligent in many ways, most of which cannot be measured with multiple-choice tests. Instead of intelligence being a numeric value, it is a combination of cognitive talents unique to each person. The nine forms of intelligences are linguistic, mathematical/logical, musical rhythmic, kinesthetic, spatial, naturalist, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and existential intelligence.
