Is the fragility of the construction of masculinity greater than that of a flower?

My team and I wanted to explore perceptions of masculinity and its limits. We looked for men in public spaces who dared to be portrayed with a wild flower in their ear.

We found all kinds of reactions to the invitation, some were offended by making it clear that they were male and were not willing to flagellate that identity with a little flower: "That's a women's thing." We received compliments, hostile looks and even misogynistic and homophobic reactions, not only from the men we involved, but also from their companions and passers-by attracted by what was happening.

This showed the persistence of gender stereotypes in the contemporary world, in this case, the streets of Havana, but also that many are willing - albeit symbolically - to accept new dynamics and explore outside the mold, thus beginning to change the structure of masculinity.

These men who dared to do so agreed when we explained the support that this image represented in the fight against gender-based violence against women. I loved the dialogue that each in their own way established with the flower.
It is imperative to question toxic and oppressive masculinity in order to get closer to more equitable and healthy relationships.

La fragilidad de la construcción de la masculinidad es mayor a la de una flor?

Mi equipo y yo quisimos explorar las percepciones de la masculinidad y sus límites. Buscamos en el espacio público a hombres que se animaran a ser retratados con una florecita silvestre en su oreja.

Encontramos todo tipo de reacciones ante la invitación, algunos se ofendían dejando claro que eran machos y no estaban dispuestos a flagelar esa identidad con una florecita: “Eso es cosa de mujeres”. Recibimos cumplidos, miradas hostiles y hasta reacciones misóginas y homofóbicas, no solo de los hombres que involucrábamos, también de sus acompañantes y de transeúntes atraídos por lo que pasaba.

Esto mostró la persistencia de los estereotipos de género en el mundo contemporáneo, en este caso, las calles de La Habana, pero también que muchos están dispuestos -aunque de manera simbólica- a aceptar nuevas dinámicas y explorar fuera del molde, empezando así a cambiar la estructura de la masculinidad.

Estos hombres que se atrevieron a hacerlo, accedieron cuando le explicamos el apoyo que representaba esta imagen en la lucha contra la violencia de género hacia la mujer. Me encantó el diálogo que cada uno a su manera estableció con la flor.
Es imperante cuestionar la masculinidad tóxica y opresiva para poder acercarnos a relaciones más equitativas y sanas.
