Sawyer Petrick's profile

What Are Feature Films?

Holding a bachelor of arts in film from the New School in New York City, Sawyer Petrick recently served as a script writer for Whole Picture Films. While there, Sawyer Petrick wrote an episode of a web series, The Look, and was a script consultant on a feature film, The Speech.
A feature film is generally thought of as a movie with an average running time of 80 to 180 minutes, but the designation may depend on who is defining it.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences considers a feature film to be at least 40 minutes long; those under that length are considered short films. The Screen Actors Guild, meanwhile, pegs the minimum length for a feature at 80 minutes. Typically, features shown in commercial movie theaters are longer than that.
Also, a feature film is a dramatic, comedic, animated, or documentary that is produced without the inclusion of any commercial breaks and is intended for multi-market commercial distribution.
