Musica Sacra 2022

Musica Sacra is an annual music and arts festival held in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The festival covers an entire breadth of genres, styles, and eras, supplemented with unique premieres and composition assignments, performed by national and international musicians, ensembles, and new talent. In addition to music, an extensive programme of theatre, film, lectures, exhibitions, dance, and excursions is also offered.
Every year, the programme of Musica Sacra Maastricht is built upon a central theme. The theme of 2022 is 'EXODUS'. Graphic design students from the Maastricht Institute of Arts, including me, were challenged to design the visual identity of the festival’s theme. My design received an honourable mention.
Initials represent the starting point of a new chapter in a story. In the context of this design, people are leaving their past behind in the hope of finding a better future. This is the moment when they transition to a new start, a new chapter in their life.
The initials feature a combination of illustration and typography, with the human figures drawn in the style of ink drawings (cross-hatching). The overall style has a connection to the initials from illuminated manuscripts (from the Middle Ages) while at the same time having a contemporary appearance.
