Splits Flexibility for Dancers | Infographics

Introduction

For this project I had to spend as many hours possible on learning something new. I had to document the learning process and then design an infographics poster or data visualization poster with the help of my data collected.

I chose to learn how to increase my flexibility towards splits. As a dancer, I have always wanted to learn how to split, to improve my flexibility in dance. Because I only did ballet at a very young age, the Latin dancing that I have taken forward does not include split training. It has always been a personal goal to achieve in my dance career, however due to a busy schedule, time has been an issue in achieving this goal.

The main goal is to be able to split. Even if I am able to just increase my flexibility towards splits so that I can continue to train for it after this project, that would be my secondary goal. Due to intense stretch training, I will need to be careful to not over do it. I will have to limit my daily stretching and continue with the stretch exercises throughout the project.
I will also explore the best ways to stretch different muscles to enhance split training.

Splits Training

Consistency is the key to split training!

Most effective warm up stretches:
Calf raises
Quad stretches

Most effective stretches for splits flexibility:
Low Lunge
Bent Leg Lunge
Runners Lunge
Sitting Pike

Tips:
- 60 seconds each side (left/right)
- do not exceed physical limit
- add a pulse action to lunge stretches
    (to work and lengthen muscles)
I completed 11.5 hours of splits training & stretching over 12 days.

Concept for Infographic

The final infographic is scalable to the size of a standard yoga mat. The idea is to have the infographics printed on a yoga mat so that the user can use the mat to stretch and learn the stretches all in one go. The infographic is designed and laid out so that if the user sits the the printed infographic mat they will have the stretches displayed right in front of them. This is an effective way to make use of an infographic in other ways than just a poster.
