THE INTENT OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CARRY THE ESSENCE OF THE OLD DR. KENNEDY HOMES BY CREATING A SERIES OF PATHWAYS THAT COMMUNICATE THE DIFFERENT APARTMENT UNITS. ADDITIONALLY THERE ARE PUBLIC GREEN SPACES BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT APARTMENT BUILDINGS THAT BRING A SENSE OF INTIMACY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE APARTMENTS FACE EACH OTHER, IDENTIFYING A PUBLIC DEFENSIBLE SPACE, WHERE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES CAN INTERACT SAFELY. THE BUILDINGS ARE ORIENTED ACCORDING TO THE DIRECTION OF THE PREVAILING SE WINDS CREATING FUNNELS THAT DIRECT THE WIND INTO THE DIFFERENT UNITS AND PROVIDE FOR NATURAL CROSS VENTILATION. THERE IS A DIAGONAL “PEDESTRIAN BOULEVARD” THAT CUTS ACROSS THE SITE THAT SERVES AS AN ORGANIZATIONAL AXIS. THIS AXIS CONNECTS A TRANSIT HUB, WHICH SUPPORTS THE BROWARD BOULEVARD CORRIDOR, AND A CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL CENTER FOR THE COMMUNITY OF RIVERBOAT BEND.

THERE ARE UNITS OF 1 AND 2 BEDROOM APARTMENTS ORGANIZED WITHIN THE DIFFERENT APARTMENT BUILDINGS. THESE APARTMENT BUILDINGS HAVE A SECONDARY SKIN TO SHELTER THE USERS FROM THE SUN AS THEY ACCESS THEIR UNITS; THE SKIN ALSO SHELTERS THE INTERIOR SPACES ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. IT IS COMPOSED OF DIFFERENT SIZED AND COLORED ALUMINUM PANELS THAT CREATE A VERY ENERGETIC AND VIBRANT FAÇADE. FURTHERMORE, INCLUDED IN THE MASTER PLAN IS A SERIES OF TWO STORY 3-BEDROOM TOWNHOMES THAT WILL HOUSE THE LARGER FAMILIES, THESE REPEAT THE ALUMINUM PANEL FAÇADE IN A PLAYFUL VOCABULARY.
