'DUKAAN?' Installation

'DUKAAN ?'
An installation 'DUKAAN ?' (hindi word for shop) made for the exhibition LINKING SARKHEJ, at NID.

The installation is about the lives of a few old women of a small settlement in Sarkhej. Small tuck shops set up outside their houses, these old women are less concerned about business through these shops. They are used more by the people as socializing points in the settlement. Allowing the old to be at home with their grandchildren yet giving them a sense of empowerment, these small convinience stores lend a character to the crowded settlement.
As a result, a small room in the house or the courtyard is spared to set up a small arrangement for selling goods. A couple of them park 'thelas' just outside their doors, others set up khats and arrange their goods.
These old women are less concerned about business through these shops, but they are seen more as socializing points in the settllement. Women stop by at these shops, meet, chit-chat and spend time there. Passers-by stop to catch up on the chat. Some come to purchase goods.
A representation of the stores.
A video narrating stories of women playing on the TV in the backgroud
Photos of the women and their shops were exhibited in these characteristic glass bottles.
