What is special about Karuhat the fighter is his unique rhythms, the surreptitious ways he works the space, punctuated with beautiful weapons, so when you spar with him the very best thing is to feel these rhythms, in person, and become populated with them. And every time to photograph it is to try and bring together this play of weapons, and the psychological in-fighting that often is composed of laughter. Sylvie's known and trained with him in this way for many years now. (We've documented a great deal of it, over 9 hours here, over 30 hours here, making Karuhat perhaps the most documented elite fighter in history.) But what I hope these photos bring forward is that kind of inter-play, a kind of bossanova of sparring that brings the rhythmical, the playfully agonistic and the technical together. It's really something to watch and capture. My edits are varied to bring out the aesthetics of each moment as I see them. --- here is another series on Karuhat, as well
