Studying clay bodies is a very important part of every ceramic studio. Understanding core information like compatibility between materials, firing temperature, shrinkage, response to various types of glazes and stains, color variation before and after firing and so on. Being a part of the Little Goldfish Studio, I was able to study multiple types of terracotta collected from various locations around Kerala as well as India and understand the material properties. Different types of glazes were tried and the results were absolute surprise!
Types of Terracotta used were from tile industries, multiple local pottery communities and from the ceramic industries from North India.
Studying glazes and its responses after firing involves critical planning, marking and naming of clay bodies in its various forms.
