This project submitted for the architecture competition Rebuilding Siargao, held by Archstorming.

Briefing from the competition:
LOKAL Tabo is a local community market that serves as a platform for local artisans, creators, and producers to display and sell their goods without any fees and for the local community to easily access locally and naturally grown produce and plastic-free alternatives. It’s more than just a community vegetable market. It has made the distribution process of farmers much simpler, it has given locals easy access to sustainable and fresh produce, and it also has given people the opportunity to work and provide for their families. To preserve the culture of the town and ensure sustainability, LOKAL renovated old existing houses to breathe new life into it. However, their 1st Tabo was completely destroyed by the typhoon.

Project Brief:
Within the project, a design system has been developed to support a sustainable community. The aim is to create an ecologically healthy and economically viable community centre and marketplace that meets its own needs and is sustainable in the long term while making it easier for both locals and tourists to access local produce. The project aims to raise the quality of living in the community and empower locals to create a resilient and sustainable society. In order to support and empower the local community of Siargao, New Tabo also will be able to respond to emergencies typhoon. The proposed design system, compact and circular as a dome with a clear span roof, creates less damage in the destructive phase, is low cost, and is directed locally to be self-built, without any intervention from outside companies. Within the construction of the New Tabo, locally available materials, such as coco coir and limestone, are preferred to create infrastructure with the least possible carbon footprint. That usage also goals eliminating wastes by using coco coir fibre to create cococrete by adding value to products with coco waste and helping cocofarmers increase their income. As a form of bio-crete, the cococrete, a low-carbon locally produced building material, helps to mitigate environmental destruction and create more comfortable low-carbon buildings. In garden design, it has been constructed in a relationship that will serve each other with the relative placement. Each element has many functions, and other components support each important function. Natural plant succession is used and accelerated to obtain suitable lands and soils. Polyculturalism and the diversity of beneficial species are provided for an efficient and inactive system.
