Back in the Autumn of 2013 i was asked by The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to produce a body work for the official Foreign Language nominees at The Oscars to be held on March 2nd 2014.
This was a once in 10 lifetimes opportunity and a project that has been a dream from the very beginning.
After months of guesswork and endless blogs of cinematic speculation surrounding which films would finally be up for the award nomination, it was finally revealed to be:
The Broken Circle Breakdown, from Belgium
The Hunt, from Denmark
The Great Beauty, from Italy
Omar, from Palestine
The Missing Picture, from Cambodia
All worthy of an Oscar in their own right and all so very different. From performance driven character pieces to folk art figurine narratives and personal memoirs blurred with political history. There was Love, loss, grief and portraits of persecution. I couldn't wait to get started!
After i had made my initial sketches, discussed concepts and the finer project specifications i had to explore the common thread that would bring all of these individual works together. When it came to realising these images i felt that a digital reproduction just didn't cut it. These images were meant for more than that. I was looking of something special, something to be treasured. That was when it was decided I'd get these screen printed as run of original print editions and when i found White Duck Screen Printing Studio i knew i had found the place to make something truly unique.
The creative team at White Duck very kindly welcomed me into their studio where i spent the week documenting the production process and was on hand to witness these prints come to life. The craftsmanship at White Duck is an inspiration in itself, i had spent months studying these films and exploring how id tackle them visually but watching them come together using a traditional printing method was like seeing them again for the first time. The charm of the screen printed format expertly delivered by White Duck definitely gave them the zest is was looking for.

So i guess this would be a good time to congratulate Paulo Sorrentino on winning his first Oscar with the sublime "The Great Beauty". That makes it the 11th Academy award for Italy and proves to the world yet again that Italian cinema is still a creative cinematic powerhouse.
I would also like that thank my Art Director at the Academy for his trust, guidance and support throughout this project and its ongoing process, 'thank you'.
All 5 posters were printed in editions of 100. Signed & numbered at the White Duck Studio.
The paper we chose was a Mohawk Superfine Eggshell White, 270gsm, acid-free & archival stock.
All prints used a uniform 3 colour palette of postbox-red, translucent cool-grey & supa-black.
