Suburbs being redeveloped（再開発される郊外）
私は幼い頃から郊外で暮らし、育ってきた。郊外は現在も再開発によるスクラップ・アンド・ビルドを繰り返しながら、日々その姿を変え続けている。現代は効率と利便さが追求される、消費社会が主体である。その結果として郊外には、やや均質化された景色が広がっている。郊外は消失と再生が繰り返された、まるで時代の堆積物の様であり、現代を象徴する風景であると私は考える。
ありふれた郊外での生活が便利になる度に、私は自分が文化的生活を享受出来ることを、あたりまえに考えてしまう。私は大量生産・大量消費が繰り返される社会の姿に疑問を抱きながら、自らが文化的生活から離れることが出来ない、ぬるま湯に浸かった暮らしをしている。それでは郊外らしい風景＝至る所に広がり、気にも留まりにくい、名も無い景色を私が見つめることに、どの様な意味があるのだろう。
郊外の再開発によって土地の造成が繰り返され、日々変化を続ける風景に、私は美しさを感じる。それは郊外に於ける、工業的な均質性から生み出される、デザインの様式美のためであり、また消費が繰り返される、ありふれた日常の生活美のためである。おそらく私が郊外を見つめる上で重要なことは、私たちが自然や環境と共存し続けられる、平和で豊かな未来の社会の姿を想像することである。そして私が文化的生活を送る、今日の郊外の姿を物語る言葉を見つけることだろう。だから再開発される郊外を前に、私は立ち尽くしながら眼差すことを止めない。
I have grown up in the suburbs. The suburbs continue to changing scenery day by day as a result of repeated “scrapped and built” through redevelopment. In this way, the suburbs expand a slightly homogenized landscape. I consider the suburbs may be like modern-day deposits and sediments, which repeated disappearance and rebirth. We live in a consumer society that pursues efficiency and convenience, and I recognize the suburbs have become a landscape that symbolizes our times.
My usual life in the mundane suburbs became more convenient, and I think no doubt the fact that I enjoy a cultural lifestyle. But we must notice about repeated mass-production and mass-consumption of society. Actually, I live in tepid water, unable to leave the excessive life of culture by myself. So, what does it mean for me to looking at the suburbs, with those nameless landscapes?
When I look at landscape that continue to change and repeat redevelopment daily, I feel beautiful. This feeling means the stylistic beautiful of design produced by homogeneity of the suburbs, and also the beautiful of daily life by repeated consumption. What is important for me looking at the suburbs? Perhaps, I will imagine for peaceful and prosperous future society where we can continue to live in harmony with nature and environment. Now, I am searching "a words" to express the suburbs, where I live in today. That is reason why I stand front of the suburbs and contine to looking at them being redeveloped.
