Design Process
To start making the new branding I looks through elemnt of the shop that had been used before to advertise the shop. The manager wanted to focus on the shops old arch design, and specifically the flower in the centre.
Original Branding Elements
Branding Sheet Concepts
As there was not a defined branding sheet, I initiated making a branding sheet from scratch. I used a verity of colours and elements in the initial branding sheets to experiment with how the shop could be presented.
Initial Concepts
Floral Concept
Based off floral patterns linking to the theme of natural subjects and materials present in most of the products in display. However this theme could be more associated with plant suppliers.
Wicker Concept
Based off a wood and pattern based theme. This theme was to be more abstract than the floral theme, incorporating pattern elements. This theme however was more unique looking which the new branding was not aiming for.
Geometric Concept
Exploring the more geometric elements of the wicker theme. The geometric theme was to be even more abstract with the interpretation of art on display. However this theme too separated from the original branding.
Rico Concept
This theme used aspects of risoprint colours and simple shapes to create a more abstract interstation of the floral theme. This meant the theme was less likely to be connected to a
Painterly Concept
This theme was imitating more of a painterly effect with abstract elements. It tied into the paintings and artwork on display. However this theme would cause more customers to confuse the centre with a art supplies shop.
Pebbles Concept
This theme mixes the floral elements from the riso and flora concept, with some abstract elements of painterly concept. It also uses a similar colour pallet to the original branding but with a stronger focus on flat blues.
Colour Concepts
There was a very positive reception to the pebbles design concept, however some concern was made of whether the colours connected back strongly enough to the original colours. So I experimented with bolder blue tones and soffening some of the original brandings colours to fit together better.
Proposed Branding Sheet
Paper Bag Stamp
Paper bags are used in the shop to package goods, however none of them where branded. The shop had prevoisly used stickers and labels for the bags, however the price and not being to recycle them meant they were not being used anymore.
Because of this I proposed creating a stamp design to brand the bags with. This meant only ink refils had to be bought, and the paper bags could still be recycled.

Tote Bag Template Design
I was also asked to make a design which could be printed onto tote bags to be sold in the shop. As there was no defined branding when I was asked to make one I decided to base theme my design on gloucester and crafts.
I used Gloucester’s crest of a red lion as an inspiration for a central character. Scissors and a needle represented the craft theme because of Gloucester's links to the textile industry down Westgate Street where the shop is based.
Template Concept
After talking with other makers in the shop, the idea of making a simple template for the tote bags for other artists to follow was brought up. This would mean other artists could submit illustrations for tote bags instead of only one design being used.
Finished Template and Design
The finished template uses the stamp design to link back to the redesigned branding. I elongated it lenthways and split it in half to give the illustration the central spot.
Posca Window Diplay
To link the front of the shop to the new branding, and catch more customers eyes, I proposed and designed a posca window display. The main aim of the display was to stop the shop from being confused with an art materials shop.
