Children's Book Design and Illustration

Design and illustration of the book
"The Big Book of Tasks and Puzzles"
The main objective of this project was to create a book of puzzles for children aged 6 to 9 years, using editorial text and manuscripts with indicative tasks for the book. The full scope of work included: cover, titles, 80 pages of assignments and answers to them. The task from the publisher was to create a catchy bright design of illustrations with easy-to-read text and competent compositional arrangement of components.
Sketching
During the sketching, it was important to identify the future graphic style, as well as a reasonable size of illustrations, so that it would be convenient for the child to solve puzzles. As for the style, we settled on the option with a line + color in which you can keep a balance between the game and the learning atmosphere. It was decided to place illustration components 4, less often 3, tasks per page to preserve the airiness of the composition.
Colors solution
Rainbow bright colors - yes! :)
Grey, brown, dull colors - no! >:(
Font solution
For the children's edition, a square round grotex was best suited. Crisp and clear, easy to read and understandable for those who have just learned to read.
Prepress
The final layout of the edition was created in InDesign. The illustration files have been attached via links. Safe zones, bleed space, minimal overlapping of illustrations on the safe zone - everything was taken into account.
Graphic solution
One particular style was bred, with emphasis on the faces of the characters and cartoonishly hyperbolized limbs. A general friendly look with smiles and exaggerated emotions will help the child better navigate the context of what is happening in the picture. The text came out not too small and not too large, so as not to draw attention to itself, but only to support the illustration. After going through a couple of stages of verification, we found the optimal gaps between the elements of the illustrations, so that it would be convenient for the child to solve puzzles.

Cover design
The decision was made to style the cover more to suit the tastes of the parents, as they end up being the target customers when the kids are the target consumers. Thus, the book combined two styles: cute kids with round outlines on the cover and daring puzzle characters inside the book.
