The original scene was going to have a little more focus on the guard station and significently more emphasis on the guard interacting with the system. With that regard, production requested actor notes for a gesture system to interact with the system convincingly.
To pull of a scene that will only be shown briefly once, the system was modelled on the same touch gestures that people already use on touchscreen devices, the only difference being that the person interacting is using line of sight to interact with a specific element rather than making contact with a screen. The bonus here being that an audience is familiar with the gestures and understand what is happening as well as the actor.
But as is often the case, things change in development and edit and it was out of place in the greater flow of the story.
