The Vjosa River, Europe's last untamed wonder, flows through the Balkans, teeming with life and captivating landscapes. It holds the potential to become a sustainable tourist destination, inviting travellers to embrace its wild allure while participating in conservation efforts.
The "The valley that brings people together" project focuses on environmental conservation and sustainability. Our primary objective was to infuse life into panoramic vistas and agricultural camps, thus creating inviting points for people that are travelling through the region to reach the thermal baths of the Vjosa River in Permet, to find it attractive to stop.
The two strong points in this area were that the residents cultivated bees and breathtaking landscapes. Through architectural choices that imitated nature or, in any case, came close to it, we designed a resting place where people could increase their sense of belonging in the culture of this area.
In one key location, where beekeeping thrived, we envisioned a tourist and commercial hub centred around beehives crafted with local wood. This space would allow tourists to engage in beekeeping experiences as well as offer traditional local honey and a place to rest after their adventures.
Additionally, in another space of the area, we conceived an iron and wood viewing point situated at a high elevation point, providing a fresh perspective on the breathtaking landscape without disrupting nature.
In both concepts, we prioritised the use of locally sourced materials to minimise the environmental impact and allow visitors to immerse themselves in the untouched beauty of the area.
