Five-way Intersections
A Social-economical Node within The Existing 'Living' of The Malay Enclave
The Urban Opportunities in Kampong Bharu, Kuala Lumpur

The five-way intersection across Jalan Raja Muda Musa in Kampong Bharu, Kuala Lumpur has been identified as an urban uniqueness that transforms the junction into a socio-economical node within the existing ‘living’ of the Malay enclave. The uniqueness formed by the expansion of road networks throughout the years with additional road junctions was established, seemingly creating a unique frontage of business extension (father-house) from the individual houses (mother-house).

Mixed-use of the public and private domain is created within the five-way intersection: the business extension (father-house) and the living (mother-house) as the local communities sparked the left-over negative space as a business opportunity, transforming it into business vendors within the Malay enclave. Therefore, the angular plot of land formed due to the segmentation of roads has eventually created an urban opportunity that serves the local communities. A stop-and-go culture is created at the five-way intersection.

The redefining of leftover spaces serves local communities in two different aspects. Business extension from the individual houses formed at the junction has turned into an open concept of a food hub that has brought economic and social support. Thus, a socioeconomic node is created in the five-way intersection allowing local communities to stop by, instead of transit through. All in all, the unique townscape of the qualities of the five-way intersection provides a sense of belonging and a sense of place in Kampong Bharu, Kuala Lumpur.
