Aegis is a mythical goat skin cape that belonged to Zeus and had magical protective properties. It was the skin of Amalthea, the goat that fed Zeus, and he made a shield out of it. The daughter of Zeus, Athena, wore the aegis as part of her attire, attaching to it an image of the head of the Gorgon Medusa. The modern expression "under the aegis" means to be under the protection of some powerful force.
