The Silent Struggle
Senior Degree Project
This was a year long project including a semester of research and a semester of design and production. My research focused on the emotional effects of abortion. I was inspired from reading testimonials of women who experienced abortion regret. My concept gives these women who often struggle in silence, a voice to express their deepest conflicted emotions.
I chose to work with ten stories and did numerous type studies in order to experiment with different ways of setting the type to communicate my message. For my final solution, I chose to go in the direction of type portraits because it best illustrated my concept. For each story, I used a different typeface so that it would have its own voice.
I chose to present my piece as an installation using hanging panels of plexi glass at various depths to correspond to my concept. The stories are etched into the plexi because their words cut deeply, and the lighting casts shadows to represent the loss involved in abortion.
