Exquisite Scar: Book Cover

For this project we were given two lists of words, the first containing;
Active, Exquisite, Pretty, Awkward, Hideous, Ugly, Ravishing, Bizarre, Fascinating, Cadverous, Clumbsy, Coarse, Spirited, Decrepit, Weak, Brawny, Repellent, Lively, Strong, Dapper, Sturdy, Delicate, Ghastly & Vivacious.

Then we had to choose a word from the second list;
Light, Soft, Invisible, Light, Shadows, Sun, Celestial, Cloud, Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Cement, Smoke, Nausea, Scar, Dust, Stone, Illuminated, Night, Hard, Darkness, Bright, Shiny.

The words we chose had become the title for a book in which we have to design for, trying to be avoid coming across as pictorial.
My words were;
Exquisite Scar
To start this project we were told to create a modular typeface using shapes of our choice.
I chose a 1x1 Square & a curved corner.
Using grid paper I planned the typeface
After photocopying the shapes i made the letters using cutouts
With the help of photoshop and the Multiply blend mode, this is what the suggested typeface would look like,
Illustrator.
I wanted to keep the typeface fancy, with ideas of calligraphy
I chose my favourite letterform for each character.

Sharpie
At this point i had the idea of cutting my design into paper then sowing it back together, similar to how a scar would form physically on a living being.
I realised that such a fine design would be almost impossible to create, so returning back to the drawing board i created this rough sketch- with Exquisite being added later on photoshop.

This was also a point in my project where I wanted to push my boundries and try something new, so rather than anything like paper i wanted to create something more authentic- which is where i came up with the idea of putting my design on Pig skin bought from a local butchers.

The following photographs contain images of pigskin.

Picture of myself cutting the pigskin.
So after cutting the design i started to sow it back together, but it was ill thought through as i was using an inproper needle- so it was very difficult.
After starting to sow the left side i gave up, i spent about 2 hours sowing and my fingers were in pain.
So with the first design finished i decided to make cuts into the other peices of skin.
I also took photographs of the textures, just in case.
