Interactive title sequence design: The OA (fan version)

People desire a new experience every time when they see the opening credits: they seek additional involvement and engagement. Also, most of the series have a core genre and subgenres. Considering how the intro sets the mood and onboards the viewers, the opening credits can manipulate the viewers’ expectations and focus on the show. The first main concept is to create several alternative versions of the title sequences, which highlight different aspects of the subgenres of the show. The audience would get the title sequence, which is based on their previous preferences (the principle is similar to Netflix thumbnail algorithm).

For the content the show The OA was taken, which plot is based on near-death experiences and multidimensional traveling. The core genre is drama, subgenres: science fiction, supernatural, and fantasy. Given the nature of the show – the multidimensional traveling and alternative realities, the concept was pushed further: introducing the possibility of exploring alternative opening credits by switching them simultaneously. This would allow us to create new experiences each time. For smoother transitions, the modularity and anchor points would be incorporated.

The process was divided into 3 main steps:
1. Searching for the symbolic parts of the show, which anticipate the plot in a subtle way;
2. Looking for the objects/scenes, which can be put in different settings/moods;
3. Creating the storyboard, which includes modularity.

As the final result, two alternative credits were designed: One highlights the darker aspects of the series, meanwhile, the second focuses on the fantasy features. The transition between the two videos would occur when pressing the button "Travel".
