‘Subtly Everyday’

My work explores the idea of working to live. To sustain and have a better life we need to make money and to earn money, we must work. At the same time, your job title gives you your status in society. Anywhere in the world it is the same. It might not be just for money that we work but we always work for something.

Each day we struggle to get work done and be free. Once the work is done, we look for more. One after another we keep searching and finishing tasks that give purpose to all our lives.

When I left home, I started to understand what everyday chores are and how important they are to have a good life. Money might get you liberty to get things but doing things on my own for the first time, I learnt something important and that is empathy. I started to understand the struggle of people who play a role in the most essential parts of life, people working as cleaners, restaurant workers, small vendors, carpenters, painters, and all the non-prestigious titles who are arguably the most important part of our human life. And through this journey I started appreciating and helping others whenever I got the chance.
Back home in India, all my chores and basic routine things were done for me, by my mother. In that time, I never got a chance to thank her or empathise with her for what she does. With such simple everyday tasks, I felt grounded and realised how difficult it is to keep a house perfect, to make meals and to make a house into a home.

‘Subtly everyday’ is a documentary about simple acts of the day, divided into various, seemingly simple, actions for example, what you do after waking up in the morning and so on until you sleep again, I tell this through the lens of a mother and child. It is a comparison between two different lifestyles, generations, and worlds. It is about a relationship and understanding of life. It explores the value of friends, family, and people around us and how much of an important part they are of our everyday.

Here I present the ‘Tea for two’ as an experience of having tea in shoes of mother and child from two different lifestyles.
