** 1st Prize Winner of the Karura Forest Educational Centre by the UN and Friends of Karura ** Shortlisted for World Architecture Festival Award in the Future Education category. The Karura Urban Forest is situated north of Downtown Nairobi. Karura Forest has an area of 1 063.0 ha, making it largest of three main gazetted forest in Nairobi. Features in the forest include a waterfall, bamboo forest, marshland, Mau Mau caves and an old church. The United Nations Office at Nairobi and UNEP headquarters are located adjacent to the forest. This educational centre aims to reintroduce the public to the forest. The architecture seperates the public from the forest but provides a new journey towards and into the woodlands. A wide range of facilities eg. exhibition space, auditorium, eco shop, cafe, library, office space, meeting rooms support the activities on the threshold of the forest. Auxilliary spaces include a bird watching hideout, a flooded room in the forest for meditation, an amphitheatre, viewing decks from the tower, event spaces and access to forest walks.
