张謇与刺绣的缘分起于1909年南洋劝业会,当时有一幅顾绣董其昌书大屏需要鉴定,被任命为劝业会审查长的张謇,特地请苏绣名家沈寿鉴定,绣品刚打开,沈寿即断定为真品。
张謇惊其才识,决定于南通女子师范学校设绣工科,请沈寿来主持。沈寿之于绣,能悟象物之真,能辨阴阳之妙,曾自谓:“天壤之间,千形万态,入吾目,无不可入吾针,即无不可入吾编绣。”她专心教授技艺,培养一批刺绣人才。沈寿完成了刺绣史上最完整最宝贵的《雪宧绣谱》一书。
张謇在绣谱的序言中说:“积数月而成此谱,且复问,且加审,且易稿,如是者再三,无一字不自謇书,实无一语不自寿出也。”该书是沈寿数十年刺绣经验的积累,也是对包括明代“顾绣”在内的民间刺绣经验的小结,内容全面丰富,堪为我国第一部系统总结苏绣艺术经验的专门著作。
