Furniture Design Coffee Table

Furniture Design
Spring 2009
For this class we only had one project. We had to design and build a full scale piece of furniture from start to finish. My inspiration for this piece was a glasses case. It could be opened one way, rotate all the way around itself with no hinges. I  wanted to make a table built around this concept. i made countless models, and discovered that the table could be any shape, as long as the sides that were rotating around each other were the same length. I finally decided to go with a square, because the table had the most uses that way. It can be opened lengthwise and used as a long bench or coffee table, turned into an "L" shape, or be closed with either the shelves exposed or hidden. It can also be turned on its side and used as a console table, or fully upright and used as a tall book shelf. I designed it, calculated the measurements, and constructed the entire thing, with limited help and guidance from my teacher. It is made out of walnut veneered plywood, and solid walnut. The bands that act as the hinges are nylon webbing which is often used for seat belts.
