BiG - Bouldern in Göttingen
Visual Communication
A big challenge for bouldering gyms in smaller towns is educating the public about what bouldering actually is and why everyone should try it. As images speak louder than words, BiG's website consists of large, full-screen images of, well, bouldering. Everything else is kept minimal so users are still able to navigate the site easily.
UX/UI Design
The mobile-first design is focused on getting the user to the information they seek as easily as possible. The background images visually communicate the content of their sections. When it comes to "Routesetting", for example, users usually want to know what part of the gym will be changed in the upcoming routesetting round. The navigation architecture has been kept minimal and easy to use so all relevant information can be found quickly.
Logo Design and Typography
The logo needed to be very simple as it had to work in many different scenarios and material equally well, from the website to flyers and even in wood working. Flat design was key in achieving that flexibility.
Being inspired by the American motto "go big or go home!", large bold letters in a sans-serif font were an easy choice so the "Gilroy" font family was a perfect fit. The "G" contains an upward facing arrow, as these kind of symbols are quite common in bouldering gyms to indicate the start of a boulder problem (a route). Additionally, climbing "up" is the essence of what bouldering is all about.
After deciding for a font (step 1) I made the logotype even more geometrical/symmetrical to resemble the shapes and forms you'll find in a bouldering gym and added a unique style element (step 2). Finally, I simplified even further to allow for easy and flexible usage and created the icon (step 3).
Print Design
As a sports gym located in Göttingen, students have to be the main target group. Hence, print design has to appeal to the student-spirit of the town.
