Growing up in Brazil but living most of my life in The Netherlands, my relationship to the Portuguese language has been complex. On one hand, it's my mother tongue and feels like a natural link to my home country's culture; on the other hand, my lack of practice created a distance between me and the language. And as an expat in Europe, surrounded by different cultures every day, I see the similarities and differences between many languages. This allows me to view the Portuguese language (and Brazilian words) from an outsider's perspective.
I began collecting a list of words I would hear from conversations in Portuguese between my family and friends, thinking how the pronunciation sounds so interesting, funny and different compared to other languages. The Brazilian Words project is an appreciation of the beauty of how we express ourselves, looking at culture from different perspectives, and sharing cultural expression. The way in which the words are playfully laid out encourages the viewer to really think about how they sound or how they are pronounced, and maybe teach them something new.
The installation piece features a hanging shape made of holographic fabric, where visitors were invited to submit their interesting or funny-sounding words from their own languages (along with their definitions). They wrote the words on a card which is then pinned and added to the shape, forming a collection of fun and unusual words for everyone to share a part of their culture and learn about others. Hosted at the Brazilian Consulate in Amsterdam, this was a perfect location for foreigners to interact with the works.

Crescendo no Brasil mas morando a maior parte de minha vida nos Países Baixos, minha relação com a língua portuguesa se desenvolveu de uma maneira complexa. Por um lado, é minha língua materna e parece um vínculo natural com a cultura do meu país de origem; por outro lado, minha falta de prática criou uma distância entre eu o português. E como uma expatriada na Europa, cercada por culturas diferentes todos os dias, estou sempre atenta às semelhanças e diferenças entre muitos idiomas. Isso me permite ver a língua portuguesa (e as palavras brasileiras), a partir de uma perspectiva externa.
Algum tempo atrás, comecei uma lista de palavras que me eram desconhecidas, ouvindo conversas entre minha família e amigos, e pensando como a pronúncia delas soava tão interessante, engraçada e diferente em comparação com outros idiomas. O projeto Palavras Brasileiras é uma valorização da beleza de como nos expressamos, olhando a cultura de diferentes perspectivas e compartilhando a expressão cultural. Como as palavras são expostas de maneira divertida para incentivar o espectador a realmente pensar sobre como elas soam ou como são pronunciadas, talvez ensinando algo novo.
A instalação apresenta uma forma suspensa feita de tecido holográfico, onde os visitantes são convidados a contribuir suas palavras interessantes ou engraçadas de seus próprios idiomas (junto com suas definições). Eles escrevem as palavras em um cartão que é fixado e adicionado à forma, formando uma coleção de palavras divertidas e inusitadas para que todos compartilhem uma parte de sua cultura e aprendam sobre os outros. A exposição foi localizada no Consulado Brasileiro em Amsterdã, um local perfeito para extrangeiros interagirem com as obras.
