Spaghetti Vespa Typography
a very Italian poster exhibition

in 2010 I curated the poster exhibition "Spaghetti Vespa Typography". This experimental show brings together 20 contemporary Italian Graphic Designer, Typographers, Calligraphers in an international design exhibition. The show was presented in 2010 in Budapest and in 2011 in Milano.

On the poster which featured the show I used famous italian stereotypes – gli spaghetti – la vespa... and ironically "typography" as a design topic for which the Italian design is internationally not very well known.

Funny remark on the project:
Instead of the "Vespa" i draw a "Lambertta". It was a provocation planed as irritation and indignation. I was convinced that people would complain that someone could confuse a "Lambertta" with a "Vespa". Well, I got quite a lot of feedback in magazines, designer blog's ecc.. Ironically nobody noticed this "insulation".

I'm not sure what lesson I've learned: don't be to intellectual in your designs, people won't get it.
Or, I'm getting old and the youger generations do not get the difference between a Vespa and a Lambretta.

Well I'am not sure which of these conclusions are cause more comforting emotions in me.
Maybe that I'm getting older...

Spaghetti Vespa Typography
a very italian poster exhibition

thursday april 14th 2011 during the salone del mobile in Milan/Italy “Spaghetti Vespa Typography” took place.
A collective exhibition of posters curated by prof. Antonino Benincasa from the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, previously presented during the 2010 Budapest Design Week an now presented during the Milano Salone del Mobile.

The poster exhibition garthers together 20 contemporary graphic designers, typographers and italian calligraphers. The aim of the project is to open ways of communication between established and coming-up italian graphic designers; a meeting platform to introduce the italian visual culture.

The posters are leading the audience throught the everyday Italian life, crossing design and press boundries.
Everybody is familiar with italy’s famous food and the popular “la vespa”, but what do you know about contemporary Italian graphic design? How well do you really know italian people?

In this poster exhibition italian typographers, famous italian graphic designers and no-names demonstrate how Italians live with design, how they see themselves and how they perceive the simple and the complicated things of everyday life.

By using ironic or critical approach, they show things which make us laugh or angry, dream and think.

The Designers:
Alizarina, Andrea Amato, Artefatti AD&P con Leonardo di Renzo, Luca Barcellona, Antonino Benincasa, Francesca Bolognini, Alessandro Costariol, ff3300, Martina Francesconi & Ilaria Marengo, Annalisa Gatto, Nicola Gotti, Renata di Litta, Matteo Moretti, Sara Pallua & Martin Kerschbaumer, Officina Tipografica Novepunti, Riccardo Olocco, Jonathan Pierini, Massimo Pitis, Leonardo Sonnoli with Irene Bacchi & Emilio Macchia, Giulia Santopadre.

In the same contest works from the students of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano - Faculty of Design and Art are shown. These works were created during a workshop curated by professor Antonino Benincasa.
