Graphic Designer | 2012–2013
Art Director | 2017–2022
Columbus Parent is the go-to publication for Central Ohio families for over 30 years. The magazine offers inspirational features, trends and tips, reading recommendations and columns that enlighten and educate. Readers also rely on Parent to find family-friendly activities and events to keep their crew on the move.
I designed Columbus Parent, a monthly tabloid-size magazine from May 2012 to December 2013, when the production of Parent shifted to another team. In 2017, I assumed the role of its Art Director and led a redesign of the magazine in 2019. We transitioned from a monthly publishing cycle to a quarterly and upgraded from newspaper tabloid to a glossy magazine. Parent is distributed for free at nearly 800 locations and a circulation of more than 26,000 copies.
Below is a sampling of my work on Parent.
Covers
Our main goal with Parent covers is to create something fun and eye-catching. It needs to grab a reader's attention as they walk by the rack. Our quarterly covers must also be able to look fresh and current during its entire 3-month shelf life.
The Redesign
In 2019, I successfully executed a redesign and transition of the magazine from newsprint tabloid to a glossy magazine. Working closely with the editor, we reimagined the whole book, creating new sections and adding a feature well. I also created a new logo and branding for the publication. My goal was to keep Parent playful and approachable but also simplify the design and elevate the look. Below is the Instagram preview for the redesign issue.
