The Lost Punctuation of Herve Bazin

In 1966, French author Hervé Bazin published the essay Plumons l'Oiseau ("Let's Pluck the Bird") in which he proposed six new pieces of punctuation that represent emotive ideas, ranging from irony to authority. This project assumes that he did not stop there, forming a narrative in which Bazin picked those six from a larger range of punctuation he designed. Throughout the process he is dogged by doubt and insecurity and fear of disappointing the unknown "Jerome", a designer friend of his.

For this project the Ugly Tree wrote, in its entirety, Bazin's hypothetical notebook - in French! - and augemented his designs with seven additional pieces of punctuation. Alongside this we designed an exhibition, to be shown at the V&A, of this discovery along with an exhibition book found by Bazin's dedicated biographer: Orson Wilberforce.
