Reading Silent Spring, we suddenly feel that we are pouring a lot of chemicals, inorganic pesticides, organic compounds, radioactive pollution, various polymers into the soil, rivers and air all the time. Beneath the disappearing plants and animals are the dying soil and water systems, and the microbes that live in them.
I zoomed in and zoomed in on the microbes, all different shapes and no expressions. I made soft pillows out of sofa parts and threw them around like a big living thing, not moving but still alive. They made me reassess the world and my impact on it.
Long fibrous hairs are their flagella, which help them swim through the medium, with eerie yet vital energy.
I made five at the sewing machine day and night, and I loved it.

We rush out chemical pesticides without investigating their effects on soil, water, wildlife or even ourselves. Nature bears the survival of all things, but we have broken the harmony and integrity of the natural environment, and posterity will probably not forgive us for such hasty behavior.
The nature of the threat is still poorly understood. This is the age of the expert, who, out of ignorance or intolerance, is too fixated on his own field of expertise to see the larger picture. It was also an age of industrial production, and as long as the product made money, no matter what the cost, no one would question it. Public protests at the disastrous effects of pesticides yield only half-comfort. We need to Pierce the false promises, peel off the sugar coating and face the bitter pill. In the words of The French biologist Jean Rosdam: the duty to endure gives us the right to know.
