One4all Birthday voucher competition

I came amongst the five finalist in the One4all Birthday voucher competition with my "Word Cake".
"Balloons"
"Noticeboard"

Concept for "Word cake" and "Balloons":

I wanted to find a clever way to mix conventional symbols used in birthday cards, vouchers etc. in an unconventional way. As this is a small card I knew the colours and illustration needed to stand out from a far.

I wanted the card to catch the customer’s attention and make them curious to pick up the card and then discover the messages within the illustration. To me; birthday is such a happy colourful celebration so it was important to me that my card would convey this.

Design:

I have created an illustration based on a slice of birthday cake but the content is text; birthday wishes and well wishes which word by word builds a layered cake with a cherry on top. It’s created in illustrator and I have used a font called Hobo Std and I have manipulated the text to create the “cake”.

Colours:

I have chosen bright colours to make the message of a celebration obvious. The final card design that I have decided to send to you is my “word cake”. I have also been looking at the colours in the One4All logo, especially the colored squares in the number 4.

Target market:

My targeted audience is 25-50+ females that buy these gift vouchers but I also believe my voucher is broad enough to reach other markets. I think anyone regardless of interest would appreciate a well-designed voucher with some quirkiness. It makes the gift voucher seem more personal yet not too niched.

Second concept "Notice Board:

My other sketches include another concept which is calendar and dates, sometimes the days fly by to the next birthday and sometimes we have to put notes in our diary and on our notice boards etc. to remember birthdays and special occasions (these were the days before Facebook). Again; I have used bright colours as they stand out and “screams” for attention and again text mixed with illustrations.

Design:

Notice board with calendar pages spelling “happy birthday” and colourful confetti. The text is Helvetica, the noticeboard (cork background) is my own photo and the calendar pages my own illustration.

Colours

The illustration is less colourful but with a clear message. I have also been looking at the colours in the One4All logo, especially the colored squares in the number 4.

Target market:

This card might appeal to a younger market, the billboard or notice board feels a bit school oriented and I would see this card being bought by 25-50+ females for younger age groups say; 10 -20 year olds. The colour scheme would work for both girls and boys.
