One of the first in a collection of fantasy/horror art that will be appearing in a role-playing game campaign guide titled Brave the Gloaming Wild, soon to be launched on Kickstarter!
The initial sketch. I thought I'd figure out the forest as I went along!
Then the rough values are painted in, along with the first trees.
More and more detail, everywhere...
Some gritty texture is added as the whole image is darkened to feel like night, or the deep shadow under an old forest.
It was high time to add some color, even though I knew so much of the image would be extremely dark!
Working up the layers of the forest, making it really dense...
...and then putting the finishing lighting touches on the wolf, to reflect the dark canopy of leaves above him.
